ABOUT

Objectful is a research of the coded values & sign languages within physical objects. The project is initiated & run by design studio Non-Objective.

CONCEPT

We possess thousands of objects. Furniture we surround ourselves with, books we read, garments we wear, devices we use, stuff we hold in our pockets and backpacks. All these things have functional value. But more mportantly, they have symbolic value. So we no longer associate objects with just the needs they fulfil, but we see signs within them.

And since there are too many objects fulfilling our needs, our consumption also changes. We are now choosing objects that communicate our values in the best way. Getting involved in this symbolic exchange (or sign exchange), we expose our socio-cultural background. This helps us to identify who’s “ours” and who’s not.

As a studio working in the field of design & branding, we encounter and get to create objects full of meaning (or signs). We initiated Objectful with an aim to research the sign language that we share with our friends, collaborators and colleagues. This research is conducted through collecting and archiving objects that help to define who we are and what we stand for.
